About the Program.

HHG Legal Group’s Artists in Residence program was established in 2020 to help support Western Australian artists. What began as a short-term initiative has since become an enduring program that reflects our ongoing commitment to the local arts community.

Based in our Perth CBD office, this program provides artists with an opportunity to showcase their work. Offering more than 30 metres of hanging space and regular exposure to clients, staff and visitors.

Since the program began, we have welcomed many exhibitions to our office, showcasing a diverse range of Western Australian artistic practice.

Out of uncertainty came something meaningful.

HHG Artists in Residence was born during the uncertainty of the COVID pandemic. After assuring staff that no one would lose their jobs because of COVID, Simon (our Executive Chairman) sat alone in our newly completed CBD office, reflecting on the challenges facing both businesses and the wider community. Surrounded by bare white walls and looking out over the street art below, he began thinking about the impact the pandemic would have on young and emerging artists who relied on galleries and public spaces to build their careers.

From that moment came the idea for HHG Artists in Residence: a way to support local artists while bringing creativity, colour and energy into the firm’s new office. What began as a simple reflection during a difficult time has become a program that celebrates emerging artistic talent and strengthens HHG’s connection with the community.

Testamonial from Carl Altmann, MA:

Welcome Artists!

Art is generally undervalued by Australians (Australians and the arts, 2001, p.51). Artists frequently rely on sources of income other than their art just to survive. It very difficult to finance an exhibition in a commercial gallery, and almost impossible to access a public gallery in Perth. This is where HHG Legal comes in.

HHG Legal Group supports artists by providing them with all the facilities to hold an exhibition completely free of charge. Why? They believe in encouraging the Arts, and besides it puts paintings and prints on their otherwise bare walls. They look after the artists in friendly and supportive ways. Their openings are elegant and well catered for with quality wine and colourful platters of light refreshments.

HHG Legal Group offers facilities to artists who may never have had an exhibition of their work. This is hugely beneficial for artists and for art lovers. The standard of art exhibited is equal to any shown elsewhere in Perth.

Our Current Resident.

We are pleased to present Look Around…, an exhibition by our newest Artist in Residence, Sue Bass.

This exhibition celebrates the beauty of everyday life and the memorable moments discovered both at home and while travelling. Through watercolour, Sue captures a diverse range of subjects, from expansive rural landscapes and city scenes bathed in twilight to vibrant blossoms, coastal views and familiar objects illuminated by shifting light.

Working with watercolour for almost three decades, Sue is continually inspired by the colours, atmosphere and stories found in the world around them. Experimentation remains an important part of her practice, with several works incorporating collage, pouring, masking and splattering techniques that embrace the medium’s spontaneity and create depth and movement.

For Sue, watercolour offers a unique way to capture the glow and character of a scene. Through these works, Sue invites viewers to pause, look closely and enjoy the beauty that surrounds us every day.

The watercolour paintings in this exhibition showcase what we see around us every day or on our travels. The subjects are portrayed using the glow and luminosity of the medium to enhance the colours and the light and capture them for you to enjoy. – Sue Bass

Artist Statement

I fell into watercolour classes nearly 30 years ago and quickly realized this would be a lifelong journey with this elusive medium – but I had fallen in love with the medium. When I look around every day, out and about, at home, near or far I see ‘a painting’ looking back at me. I know it can be captured in watercolour and enhanced in watercolour. There is my challenge, everyday – how good would that look in watercolour? I can’t wait to get my brushes out.

I usually paint from my own experiences using my own references. I like to draw, so nothing is out of bounds, including portraits. It is often the light and colours that attract me. I like to play. In this exhibition I have used collage for effect in several paintings.

The watercolour paintings in this exhibition showcase what we see around us every day or on our travels. The subjects are portrayed using the glow and luminosity of the medium to enhance the colours and the light and capture them for you to enjoy.

Have a look around …. I hope you do enjoy them.
