Matthew Lilly is a Partner at HHG Legal Group and leads the firm’s Albany office, advising businesses, farming enterprises, property owners, and organisations across commercial law, property, employment, governance, and agribusiness matters throughout regional Western Australia.
With more than 30 years’ legal experience across private practice, in-house legal roles, and company secretarial positions, Matthew understands the broader commercial realities clients face beyond the legal issue itself. His approach is pragmatic and solutions-focused, helping clients navigate complex matters with clear advice that supports long-term business objectives, operational needs, and practical decision-making. His experience spans industries including agribusiness, resources, banking, property, construction, energy, and local government.
Before joining HHG Legal Group in 2020, Matthew held senior legal and company secretarial roles with major organisations including Shell Australia, Alcoa, the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, and Bankwest. This background provides him with a strong understanding of the commercial, governance, and operational challenges faced by businesses and organisations across both metropolitan and regional sectors.
Matthew regularly advises clients on commercial transactions, property and leasing matters, employment issues, governance, company structures, director duties, construction matters, and commercial contracts. He also has significant experience advising on renewable energy projects, including windfarm and battery farm agreements involving farming enterprises and regional landowners across Western Australia.
Based in Albany, Matthew works closely with regional businesses, farming and agribusiness clients, local government, and private clients throughout the Great Southern and broader regional WA. He is known for providing commercially grounded advice that simplifies complex issues and focuses on practical, efficient outcomes.
Matthew also has extensive governance and company secretarial experience and regularly advises clients on board, governance, and compliance matters involving operational and reputational considerations.
