An Advance Health Directive (AHD), often referred to as a “Living Will”, is a legal document you can sign now directing/stating which medical treatment you want or do not want when you are unable to make this decision down the track due to mental incapacity.
Directing (stating) that you do not want mechanical life support or chemotherapy in your AHD by way of example will be followed by the doctors treating you at the time as they are legally obliged to do so.
You should discuss your AHD with your medical specialist or doctor.
Having an AHD will greatly minimise and may even prevent family conflict, as you can make difficult medical decisions in your AHD which your family would otherwise have to make.
