A command and authorisation issued by a court to its officers (the bailiff or sheriff) or to the police force, directing that some action be taken: that a person be arrested (a warrant of arrest); that his or her premises be searched (a search warrant); or that his or her goods be seized to satisfy a judgment debt (warrant of execution).
