Family mediation.

Resolve disputes peacefully through family mediation.

Why choose family mediation first?

Navigating separation brings tough decisions on parenting and finances. We offer family mediation as a practical alternative to court, creating a confidential space where you and your ex can openly discuss child arrangements and property splits with our neutral mediators guiding the conversation.

This approach saves time and reduces stress compared to litigation. By focusing on constructive dialogue, we help you sign agreements that work for everyone, especially your children, while keeping costs lower through fewer formal legal steps.

How our family mediation process works.

We start with individual introductory meetings for you and your ex, including their lawyer, to check if mediation suits your situation and agree on basic rules. If it does, we hold joint sessions at our Perth, Joondalup, Mandurah, Bunbury, or Albany offices, including shuttle mediation (where you stay in separate rooms and we move between you to facilitate discussions).

Sessions tackle key topics like splitting assets, children’s care plans and support payments, with private breaks as needed. We draft agreements on the spot, targeting enforceable results or court certificates if required, while always putting safety first in cases involving family violence.

Faster family resolutions without court.

Mediation wraps up faster than court, often in weeks rather than months or years. You stay in control of decisions on parenting schedules or financial support, avoiding unpredictable judge rulings and cutting legal bills significantly.

Our experienced family lawyers foster cooperation, easing emotional strain and preserving family ties where possible. Even if full agreement isn’t reached, we provide certificates for court and guide next steps like counselling or independent advice.

FAQ.

Common questions we hear.
  • Family mediation, also called Family Dispute Resolution is run by a trained specialist called a Family Dispute Resolution Practitioner (FDRP). They focus on family issues and could come from law, social work or psychology backgrounds, but all are accredited under family law rules.

  • Yes, you can refuse family mediation, even when the law expects you to try it first – such as when there are issues relating to children. However, it is important to understand that if you refuse mediation and head to court, a certificate will note you didn’t attend. The judge may send you back to attend mediation anyway.

  • You can try mediation more than once if doesn’t work the first time. If there’s still no agreement, you can have lawyers negotiate for you or take things to court. We’ll issue a certificate to confirm mediation was tried, so you can move forward with a court application.

  • A written agreement from mediation isn’t automatically binding. But you can make it official by turning it into Consent Orders through the Family Court or sign a Binding Financial Agreement.

  • It depends on your issues and how ready everyone is to talk and compromise. Most sessions last a few hours, but some matters need more than one session.

  • Costs vary based on your situation’s complexity and cooperation levels. We’re fully transparent, so you’ll always know your fees upfront and get updates throughout.
