BHP TO REVIEW ITS POLICY ON BACKGROUND CHECKS ON NEW EMPLOYEES | THE WEST AUSTRALIAN | 7 JULY 2021

HHG Legal Group Director Murray Thornhill was proud to feature in The West Australian, ‘BHP to review its policy on background checks on new employees’ by Stuart McKinnon.

Murray discusses how BHP is looking to expand background checks on new employees. Murray said he believed sexual assault convictions would be “highly relevant” when hiring FIFO workers, given the role involved living at close quarters with co-workers over extended periods of time. “An employer is entitled to consider all relevant factors that relate to the role they’re hiring for unless they are excluded factors under the law such as gender, race, and sexual orientation,” he said. “But someone’s criminal past is often going to be highly relevant for something like this (a FIFO role).”
